South Africa Crime stats (part 2) Where is the problem.

When looking at promotional material to tourists and possible tourists, one do get a feeling of tranquility and a sense of two worlds meeting each other. Well this is South Africa. One of the most beautiful countries in the world. However one must not totally be relaxed in South Africa when looking at the crime stats.

The once country that thrived on tourist spending money and helping the economy is also the country whereby it cannot guarantee the safety of its tourist. Most of the well known places where there once use to be a spirit of freedom and also adventure for tourist became the target market for local thieves and robbers. It happens that there is an increase in criminal activities where tourist use to gather and also being easy targets. Criminals also know that when getting caught, the tourist would be long gone and would not be able to attend court cases. Therefore nothing happens to them. This is sad for our justice department do not prosecute where the complainant is absent in court cases.

Never less spoken about the above crime, crime also increased in attacking older people and children due to their ability not being able to protect themselves. Often it would be cellular phones and handbags taken from this target group.

Looking at the 2013 crime stats one would see that house robbery, this is where people (usually armed) enter a house knowing there is people in the house and rob them. During 2013 there was 17938 cases reported. Looking at the car jacking there was 9988 reported. Armed robberies 105779 (this is case where people were robbed and weapons were used.)  Burglaries at residential premises where there was no people 261742. This is just to mention some of it and one can look for one self at the stats at http://www.crimestatssa.com/national.php

Taking in consideration public violence of 1782 cases that has been reported is due to strikes mostly. Over 410000 cases were reported of theft and shoplifting. This can be more for theft becomes a natural thing in South Africa. This means that over 410000 people in South Africa thought of taking thing from another person entering his or her private space is a right. A total of 2217862 crimes have been reported and what happened with the people is the question for in South Africa there is only 240 prisons.

According to the stats dated 28/02/2011 South Africa 159,265 prisoners out of an estimated 50.44m people in South Africa and a ration of 316 prisoners for every 100 000. There are also only about 34000 people working at the prisons. Looking at the South African Police there is an estimated 1116 police stations in South Africa with a total of 190199 employees march 2011 that serves an estimated 50 million people in South Africa over a 1.2 million square meter area.

Looking at the above one can say that correctional service employees ration 1: 4.6 prisoners. Looking at South Africa Police there was an estimate1 policeman for every 262.88 people according to the 2011 stats. These total employees in both the correctional services and the South African police include management and senior management. Looking at our court system the following was obtained. As of 2010 there were 384 districts (and thus 384 district courts), 18 sub districts with detached courts, 79 branch courts and 235 periodical courts. There were 1,914 magistrates including 351 regional court magistrates. As we also know those court cases can be lengthy and this brings a huge backlog.

Taking in consideration the above, this is what have to mange crime occurred in South Africa not even speaking about the criminals that still going to commit crimes. In the first quarter of 2014, South Africa’s jobless rate rose to 25.2 percent from 24.1 percent in the previous three months. There were 5.067 million people without work, up from 4.83 million in the preceding quarter, mainly due to job losses in agriculture, trade and transport.

Between Q4 of 2013 and Q1 of 2014, employment decreased by 122 000, largely due to a decrease of 110 000 jobs observed in the informal sector. Both Private households and Agricultural industries shed jobs (14 000 and 5 000 respectively), while a slight increase was observed in the formal sector (7 000). Never less one must also taking in consideration that this is only South African citizens and not even looking at the people leaving school and university when graduate. Copied from an article on Internet placed in 2009. Home affairs have no idea how many ilhttp://mg.co.za/article/2009-11-13-home-affairs-in-the-dark-about-number-of-illegal-immigrants.   Illegal immigrants are in SA, with Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma saying providing the figure was "difficult".
The Department of Home Affairs has no idea how many illegal immigrants are in South Africa.

Responding to a question at a parliamentary media briefing on Thursday, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said providing such a figure was “difficult”.

Asked to give her department’s latest estimate of the number of people illegally living and working in South Africa, she replied: “I don’t know. If somebody’s here illegally, how do I know they are here? I do not know, that’s an honest answer.”

The South African Police Service, in its 2008/09 annual report, said there could be as many as six million “undocumented” foreigners in the country.

“According to various estimates, the number of undocumented immigrants in South Africa may vary between three and six million people,” according to the report.

The police go on to say most of these illegal immigrants “may belong to the economically-active age group, as well as the high crime-risk age group”.

This should also be looked at and added to the unemployment rate. This would most probably add another 10% or so.

Safety tips when in South Africa

Never walk alone
Never leave valuables in a motor vehicle.
Prepare to be able to defend yourself in your home.
Always prevent high crime risk areas
Do not try to be a hero
Criminals see crime to be a right in South Africa and usually tent to violent behavior.
Criminals are cowards and tend to attack the elderly and the young and normally operate more than one.

Remember:

However what is not mentioned is the recovery rate of such stolen weapons, which is quite high and is at least 50% if not more. This from the Gun Free SA website: "Finally, too many legal guns end up as illegal guns. Between 1994 and 2003, 66 licensed guns were reported lost or stolen every day! The police recovered about two thirds of these"

Firearm Statistics in South Africa. Source: http://www.gunpolicy.org/

So, in the chart above you’ll see that in SA there are approximately 6 million firearms in private hands. The Military is said to own about 350,000 firearms and local law enforcement owns about 262,000 firearms.  No one is sure what the number of illegal firearms is but it could range from 500,000 to 4,5 million.  There are 1.8 million licensed firearm owners on South African soil. The number of illegal holder of firearms is uncertain, but could easily be more than the legal holders of firearms.

Once again, I am neither politician nor trying to put anybody in a negative light. I am just giving the facts and would like to have your comments or questions in this regard. You can also e-mail me directly to helpmehelpother@gmail.com.
