The Lubbe Foundation : Organizational profile and history

Please also visit our website at www.lubbefoundation.com for more details and contact details.
THE FOUNDER

This is to provide people with information about the founder of the Lubbe Foundation and to place perspective to the family and values. The founder Wynand Johannes Lubbe was born into the marriage of the late WFJ Lubbe and EJE Lubbe in 1969. He is the second youngest of 4 siblings.

Throughout the early years both parents were hard working people that always placed other before themselves. In spite of difficult times they always placed their children before themselves. Due to not willing to be affiliated to any specific political organization they lost their business during the late 1980’s. Throughout their lives they acted in a manner of example to the children always trying to help other before themselves.

After graduation from high school, Wynand Lubbe then went to study in a medical field, however before completion, it was necessary to enter into a career due to circumstances. He joined the South African Police Service in 1990 and with many other accomplishments; it was here where his passion and the idea of the Lubbe Foundation was born. During 2008 the urge of becoming involved in social development and social care lead to micro community assistance. This could however not expand due to health problems and the lack of support. It also became the social part of Dolphin Logistics that was founded by Wynand Lubbe. Operations however have been temporarily stopped due to the fact that the focus was turned to The Lubbe Foundation that deserves priority. It was however during May 2014 that a decision was made to go macro with the Lubbe Foundation in honor of his parents that sometimes did put other before themselves.

With the passing of his mother on the 4 July 2014, the final decision was taken that the Foundation is here to stay and failure would not be an option. However with little or none support from the business world and communities, with own funds the Lubbe Foundation was taken to a new level of not being a micro NGO but to become a household name in South Africa with the eye on international ventures. Blessings were obtained from the other Siblings and soon the Lubbe Foundation was gaining favor for what they stand for and the transparency.

VISION

The Vision of the Lubbe Foundation is to have a platform whereby all that support the same cause can join hands in reaching a common Goal. There is also a point of view that other than many NGO’s “The Lubbe Foundation” should be totally transparent in all that they do and maintain the Confidentiality in both donors and sponsors that would prefer not to be credited in public and with confidentiality of benefactors.

It is of utmost importance that when needed, identities should be protected especially in cases that are handled and Sponsors, Partners and Donors where they would like to keep their identities in private. That is part of our moral values for we cannot afford to expose people where it could have a negative impact on their life’s.

Due to the current National and International economic situation, it is difficult to obtain financial support. However it is not the aim of “The Lubbe Foundation” to be profitable and in for financial contributions, it is necessary to become sustainable. In the event where we do find sponsorship for products, overheads, building rentals, etc. We do prefer that the transaction would be done directly between the Sponsor and the Supplier for basic administrative reasons and to the benefit of the Sponsor.

The issue of sustainability will be discussed at a later stage in this document. The Lubbe Foundation also do have the vision of being non discriminative and non political. With this point of view, we do give the opportunity for people that want to give contributions to certain identified people. It would be our duty to see that the wishes of the donor or sponsor are being met. As stated the Lubbe Foundation serves as a platform whereby people can join hands in providing to a common cause.

We currently do not have Non-profit status nor receive any funding from government for we are not prepared to be guided in serving only certain groups of people. Many of the guidelines for governmental funding are discriminative and due to the fact that we cater for individual needs, we cannot bind us to criteria set. There is a difference for being held hostage for regular funding by means of criteria and to honor individual donor’s wishes.

MISSION

We at the Lubbe Foundation do know that we cannot change the world, but what we do know is that if we take hands, we can make a difference. The Lubbe Foundation has a mission towards sustainability and in reaching to people within our Cause. Our benefactors are being mainly evaluated upon personal needs and not in an average context. Each and every benefactor needs to be evaluated into what the need is and how to help that person to become independent. Most of the NGO’s and Non-Profit organizations create a sense of dependency and therefore there is a growth in need, a clear example thereof is certain government grants. In difference to that, we belief that we need to be part of the rehabilitation of individuals. In this context we look at the abused women and children that we do cater for. This however would be discussed in a later stage in this document.

Our main focus is the Elderly, Terminal ill, handicapped, abused women and children and then also the children that are victims to crime and poverty. Other than abused women and children, the Elderly, Terminal ill and handicapped is the fields that currently do get little or none support in both Nationally and Internationally.

In spite of becoming sustainable, our mission is to incorporate rehabilitation programs for certain individuals and opportunity for skill development. Other than other organizations, we do not belief in just treating the symptoms, but being part of the solution teaching people how to help themselves where possible and refrain upon having people slipping into a comfort zone.

It is also of utmost importance that we do establish partnerships with other NGO’s, Community organizations and Social organizations that can incorporate their fields of expertise into our programs. Having the Business and Individual communities on board will be the key to success for we do recognize that without them, our mission might just stay a mission and might never become a reality for without the necessary funding and resources it is impossible. Furthermore as part of our sustainability projects we are looking at the kibbutz system that proofed to be a success after established in 1909 in Israel.

OUR CAUSE AND DEALING WITH IT

Under this heading we want to be informative about our way of operations and how we do operate. The aim is that we would have nationally volunteers that would assist in identifying benefactors not limiting request to them only but also by organizations in partnership as well as possible people in need. Each and every possible benefactor needs to be evaluated towards their individual needs and circumstances within the framework of our criteria and cause. This should be seen as an intermediate solution to circumstances and not a permanent solution, for the Lubbe Foundation. We are also not there to take the social responsibility away from Government Departments or to interfere into the work of other NGO’s. Our sole purpose is to assist where ever we can and then to report the case to the necessary people dealing with this. We would then monitor to see that the specific benefactor will deserve the necessary attention. It is of utmost importance that we do create partnerships with other organization and government departments that cater within our scope of our cause. Our long term goal is to provide all our case workers with basic courses in Social development, first aid and frail care. Our cause includes the following:

The elderly : The elderly is being addressed in most societies and governments as a social liability for not being able as for other groups within our cause. This is duly to the fact that most of them will never be able to be part of economic contribution. With the lack of facilities in South Africa as well as social services, there are plenty of elderly that cannot look after themselves both resourcefully and health wise. Many of these people are abandoned and have no means of being taken care.

Services that the Lubbe Foundation can provide with the necessary funding, is to look at the nutritional aspect, regular monitoring by our voluntary case workers or when fully operational appointed case worker. Providing them with basic mobile aids and then also adapting their living space to be user friendly. This however will only be done if the benefactor falls within our criteria.

When looking at needs in this context, in spite of finances, we are looking at Clothing, blankets, food, basic medical equipment {crutches, hearing aids, glasses, wheel chairs, etc.) As in all our cases, we do not provide any benefactor with finances and therefore reserve finances would be used to obtain what is needed.

Terminally ill : When talking about terminally ill benefactors, we are talking about people that that is medically certified to be terminally ill and where all hope is being lost. These benefactors needs upon how to make there last days as comfortable as possible. When talking about making life comfortable as possible, we are looking at medical needs such as portable oxygen tanks and other essential medical equipment and nutritional products. In these cases we do not attempt to take over already active NGO’s operations, but rather assist them and support them. The Lubbe Foundation will only be active involved where there is clearly no other assistance available and where these benefactors have been failed by other NGO’s and the department of social development. Each benefactor needs will be evaluated and cannot guarantee that the Foundation would be of assistance but what we can guarantee is that where we can help, we would.

Disabled : As per previously do many in Society and Government see the disabled like the elderly and terminally ill mostly as liabilities. We at the Lubbe Foundation realize the need and that there are little or none institutions that do cater for people in this category. As benefactors, the Foundation will look at certain needs and where we can accommodate. Some of the needs other than finances would by food, clothing and then resources that could help in keeping these people independent where we can.

Abused women and Children : There is constantly a need in this field. The aim with the foundation is to ensure that these victims do get the help they need. The aim is to partner with professional people that could give a professional service to these people. Looking at children, there is always hope and by helping children in these circumstances can change their lives both psychologically and physically. The children can be put in skills development programs whereby they can have a future. Our strict criteria would be there to help benefactors that want to be helped.

The above is in short and the potential could be elaborated on, but what we want to place the attention to,  is that where there is crime against women and children, our aim is to guide these people and to see that they do deserve the necessary help that they are entitled to. Our aim is also to ensure that justice will be followed for people committing crimes against women and children.

PROJECTS

In spite of our short term benefactors, our aim is to have as soon as possible national
Networks established. This is of utmost importance to raising funds and resources for our
cause. Neverless it would also help us in addressing our cause in a more wide spread area
and not only focus in one area alone. After having our networks being established in  South Africa, we would then look at countries where we receive International support from to establish networks there, for it is not only South Africa that do have this problem.

As previously stated that we should see the Lubbe Foundation as a short time intervention and not a solution or an organization that would place people in a comfort zone of just receiving. It would only be in exceptional circumstances that the possibility for long term assistance would manifest. As previously mentioned, we cannot expect that the Lubbe Foundation would be indefinitely be supported by donations and sponsors, for it is already difficult to obtain the minimum required assistance from both the business communities and the private communities. This is however understandable because of the global financial strain due to unemployment and the increase in socio dependence with migration and other factors.

Long term projects, we would look at the kibbutz system. From Wikipedia it was found that “In 2010, there were 270 kibbutzim in Israel. Their factories and farms account for 9% of Israel's industrial output, worth US$8 billion, and 40% of its agricultural output, worth over $1.7 billion”. This would increase the sustainability of the Lubbe Foundation and also help in skill development and providing certain essential needed resources in our cause. It would also form part of our proposed skill development projects whereby we would look at forming partnership in certain fields of skills with the corporate community and educational communities to help those that really want to be helped. By means of this, we could have a multi-functional system whereby we could have skill development on one hand and then incorporation of skilled workers into the National workforce. This would be on micro scale to start off and cannot be seen as a solution to unemployment.

It is also the aim in the long term to have projects within the kibbutz system whereby facilities can be established for certain people within the scope of our cause, that can be looked after. One would here also concentrate on the elderly and handicapped. With looking at facilities for abused women and children, these should only be looked at as a short term immediate assistance to keep them safe and until the department of social services and other NGO’s can place or assist them.

The above include short, medium and long-term projects and one should not see it as a definite for all is dependent on funding which is currently one of the most crucial issues.

FUNDING, DONATIONS AND SPONSORS

Due to the fact that the Lubbe Foundation is a newly founded organization and should be seen to be in its seed stages, we do acknowledge that there is a long way to go. With all the crime, fraud and corruption happening, one should be cautious when giving money and the problem that the Lubbe Foundation currently have is the fact that it has not yet proofed itself on a National basis that it is worth to be trustworthy. Then also looking at the current funding, donations and sponsors, it merely covers the cost obtaining them. Therefore it is difficult in marketing the Lubbe Foundation especially in the fields of raising the awareness and existence as well as raising funds, donations and sponsors. As the founder once said to someone that asked if having so many obstacles, would it not be better than to just look the other way and withdraw from the Foundation for he do not benefit from the foundation. The answer was that every effort even if it is a no, it is worth it for trying especially knowing that a difference or opportunity can be given to change someone’s life. The moral of the story is that one is never a failure if you try and do not succeed. One is a failure if you did not even try.

The need within the Lubbe Foundation and its cause is vast and one should not just look at the need for finances. If looking at the need, even a simple thing as volunteering or giving time is as important as receiving money. The need for resources other than money is of great issue and what people think is of no value to the foundation, we will find a need for it. However when receiving donations other than finances, one should also look at storage and distribution abilities and resources. To be fairly honest looking at donations that we could have received if we had storage and distribution facilities across South Africa, the Foundation could have made a significant change in people’s life’s already.

Many of the people do not understand that having a charity or NGO is costing a substantial amount of money for there is cost with regards to property rental, transportation, marketing cost, basic salary  cost (difficult in finding volunteers these days), etc. Looking at sustainability in a basic network context, one would look at operational cost not less than about R50 000 (Est $5 000) per month. Many people think that when donating money, all will be going to the cause. When looking at the international NGO’s and Charity organizations, it is estimated that only about 40% of all funds raised will go to a cause and that the rest in these well-established organizations with government funding will go to overhead and operational cost. (The statistics mentioned within this paragraph has not been verified and should not be seen as factual). However looking at the above, this is reachable within a national context and is a small amount that one could mention especially towards what one could expect if there is correct marketing and proof to be a trust worthy organization.

Looking at sponsorships, one should be very care full in entering agreements. Sponsorship is normally addressed also in a way where people can sponsor certain products, items or services and in these instances, we prefer that the sponsor interact directly with the suppliers and not through the Foundation. This ensures that the supplier meets the criteria of the sponsor and that documentation and funding does not include third parties for various purposes. If there are any donors that do have a specific field within our cause and projects that they want to support, we would be honored to honor their conditions towards their donation.

CONCLUSION

Looking at the above, the Lubbe Foundation might be seen as a newly established Organization that has been informally operated on a micro scale and proofed to be successful in addressing its cause. This has however changed to a new level of operations to a National level. One can honestly say that with changing to a national level, created new challenges and requires that there must be a proper executive structure as well as proper operational guidelines. This was reached and the basic obstacles have been met and managed.

Being an Organization in the “Seed” process, the biggest obstacle is to be financially able to cover basic overhead cost and have full time employees that can ensure that targets will be met and other productive and profitable projects can be met. Our aim is also to be 100% transparent with all that we do to ensure that there would be no doubt in the honorability of the Lubbe Foundation. With networks in process of being established in the Western Cape, Kwa Zulu Natal and the Free State. The success of the organization depends on the support received from the communities and the Business communities. The Western Cape will serve as model for all possible projects and expansions, however we still must keep in mind that every network do need to have its basic overheads financially covered before any other finances can be spend towards our cause. For example, one cannot deliver free bread received from a donor if there is no vehicle or the fuel expense cannot be covered.

This document also do not only serve as information note only, but also as a plea to potential donors, sponsors and funders to not deny us the opportunity to proof the Lubbe Foundation to be worthy in receiving support. One question that many do ask is if we do pay our fundraisers and fundraiser coordinators? The answer is yes we do pay them on a pro-rata and commission basis. Many do spend time and money in the attempt to having donations, just to be turned away. Neverless are they also compelled to assist with projects within the cause in their area. Therefore in spite of not being formally employed by the Lubbe Foundation it serves them right to be compensated for their effort and willingness to be part of the Foundation and its cause. This also does ensure motivation. This however falls within the criteria of most of the international organizations.

Just also to be mentioned the foundation should not be seen by anybody as a get rich scheme or opportunity for we at the Lubbe Foundation belief in addressing our cause and make a change. Therefore any salary or wage for permanent employees will fall within the scope of their position and meeting the basic criteria of minimum wage for his or her position within the organization. It is of importance that this is being clarified because all involve with the foundation should know that the Foundation is not a stepping stone for self-enrichment.

update on the Lubbe Foundation : Worth reading.

When thinking about what happened this past few days, I just get more exited about the Future of the Lubbe Foundation. I want to Welcome Anne Couzens (McGregor), Monica Mbonani (Secunda) and Mtisunge Luhanga (Johannesburg) to the Lubbe Foundation family. Non verified area’s hopefully soon to be appointed would be East Londen,  and Wynberg. Including the already areas covered it would be 8 places. We are also looking at relocating Anne to Strand to oversee National operations as soon as the Lubbe Foundation can afford it. The reason thereof is due to her years of experience in the Charity environment. Underneath is the contact details of  all Fundraiser Co-ordinators and I want to urge everyone to please share Fundraising Ideas and also to share successes with all. It is of utmost importance that we are totally transparent in all that we do so that our supporters know what is happening with donations and sponsorships.

With the current difficulties in the economic side, I am optimistic for there are many within the organisation and cause to be done. There are no doubt that we do have supporters with regards to items like clothing,  Aids to the mobility of the elderly and handicapped and other resources. However we should concentrate on the funding of the overhead costs, the Kibbuz project and the skills development project in the Strand. This would help in reaching our goal of sustainability and the sooner we can have these projects proof to be a success, we can continue to the expansion to other provinces / area. Neverless should we not forget that there is individual cases within our cause that needs attention and it is of importance that this should not be neglected.

One of the individual needs identified is a wheelchair for a cancer patient. The price of a wheelchair is enormous however thanks to a local company, I was assured that if they do know of one to be donated, we can have it. I hope to have good news soon.

I want to give every Supporter, Sponsor, Donor, Fundraiser, Fundraiser Co-ordinator and volunteer credit for the success of the Lubbe Foundation. One should see the Lubbe Foundation as an organisation that belongs to the people of South Africa for the People of South Africa until we can spread our wings to the International Market. The Organisation is only as good as the above mentioned people and cannot exist without them.

With this, I want to provide the contact details of the Fundraising Co-Ordinators / Representatives. This list will be updated frequently. For a more up to date list, one can visit our website on the contact page. If you need a lubbefoundation.com e mail address, one will be provided.

Looking at Fundraising, we know it is a difficult task for people do not actually want or trust Organisations anymore due to corruption and unethical behaviour. The only way to change that view is to proof that we are honorable in whatever we do. It is also proofed that having friends and family supporting one, one do succeed in whatever one do set out to do. Hereby I want to place attention to family values. Let us proof to South Africa that we are a success and we are here to stay and make a difference.
